28 Apr Why the Gospel is Good – 4/28/21
1 John 2:1-2 – “My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.“
As followers of Christ, we must have deep conviction of the horror of Hell. Why? “Anyone whose name was not found in the book of life was thrown in the lake of fire” (Rev. 20:15). Hell is place of ultimate judgment; a place of fiery agony; a place of conscious torment; a place of continual rebellion. Jesus was uncomfortably transparent to His disciples about the nature of Hell (Matt. 13). Why? If there is no eternal separation there would be no reason for eternal salvation. The Gospel is not a life of prosperity, and it’s not an automatic destiny of fire and brimstone – there is grace, but only in the name of Jesus. There is a balance, perfectly contained within the profound mystery of Christ’s love for His bride. But if we want hope, we must be wed with Christ. The News is “Good” because of His atoning sacrifice, enduring our once inevitable Bad News. Our Lord found us worthy of this truth, and so He is worthy of all exaltation.
Dear Lord, we are needy and you alone are worthy. Because of your sacrifice – intended for all of your people, when we profess our faith in you, God no longer sees our sin-stained hands…but Christ’s blood that washed them clean. For this, we praise you. For this, we offer our lives as a living sacrifice. Let Citylight Church be a body that responds to conviction, a body that burns with passion for your glory; a passion that surpasses casual, nominal, cultural Christianity. And let our compassion for others be contagious for your Name’s sake. In your everlasting Name, Amen.
