Waters Cover the Sea – 12/8/20

Annabelle Patton

Habakkuk 2:14 For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.

This verse is set in the context where a proud king, Nebuchadnezzar, is reining over the Chaldeans, who are also known as the Babylonians. Nebuchadnezzar was a proud monarch who used his kingdom to pursue earthly desires, such as wealth and power, and he had built “his house by unjust gain” (Hab 2: 9). Because of this, verse fourteen proclaims that there will be a reckoning that destroys the pride and status of this monarch and his earthly gains, and through the humbling of the proud, the glory of the Lord will be known. This illustration of “as the waters cover the sea” serves as emphasis to the extent in which people will be able to see the glory of the Lord through this occurrence.

This verse reminds us of the importance of humility, in every season of our life. Especially during times of high achievements and earnings, it is easy to focus on earthly desires, goals, and status. However, we must remember to humble ourselves so that the glory of the Lord may be known, seen, and heard – just as much as the waters cover the sea.

I pray that in every season of our life, we may remain humble. That we may step aside so that the glory of the Lord may be known. I pray that in our humility, you would use us for your work, to be the hands and feet of Jesus, and to spread the good news of the Gospel.
