The Word of Life – 4/22/21

Brendan Blood

John 6:61-63 – “But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

Praise God that our salvation is not dependent on us! Verse 63 is incredibly humbling: “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all.” Not only can we not earn our salvation, but “at all” means that we, in our flesh, cannot even inch towards it. Salvation is a gift, and the grace of God is what allows us to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling, knowing that it is God who works in us (Philippians 2:12-13).

What Jesus says next should make you yearn to read your Bible… “The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.” His Words (and His alone) give life. He has revealed Himself to us through His Word, and He has granted to us all things relating to life and godliness through the knowledge of Him (2 Peter 1:3). So what? Read your Bible!

Prayer:

Father God, You are all that matters. You are so incredible, wonderful and amazing. I pray that You please give us the desire to know You more. Let Your Words be sweeter than honey on our lips. Reveal Yourself to us more. Make Yourself more known to us individually and give us the confidence to make Your name known to those around us. You are worthy of it all, Father. I pray this in Jesus’s holy and precious name. Amen.
