The Real Free Gift – 3/5/21

Adrienne Schmidt

Proverbs 11:24-25 – “One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.

When I was a kid, my parents would usually give me a little bit of cash before sending me off to a field trip, summer campbirthday party, or any scenario where I would want to buy something. For some reason, spending the money they gave me seemed far easier than if I were to spend money that I earned from a job now. Similarly, I’m much more likely to be generous with money I’ve been given than with money I think I’ve earned. As followers of Christ, the crazy thing is that all money we have has been given to us by God; whether we earned it from a job, won it in the lottery, inherited it, or anything else. As all gifts are given to us by God, money is no different. If we start to see that all of our money is a gift from God, we can then be freely generous as an act of worship. According to this proverb, giving freely actually gains us more, and hoarding actually leads to poverty – completely contrary to what our culture may say. Living out this countercultural idea can only be possible through experiencing a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, because we have been given the free gift of eternal life through His death and resurrection. This means that we continually strive to be transformed by God’s Word, and continually sanctified in all aspects of life.

Lord, may we be continually transformed by your Word, so that we may have the wisdom to apply it to our lives. Lord, give us a heart that yearns to give in every situation you present before us. I pray we would give freely and cheerfully, not out of obligation or duty. We thank you for every gift you have given to us. And may your Son always be glorified in our generosity. Amen.
