The Name – 5/4/21

Noah Baker

Philippians 2:9-1 – “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth…”

In Charles Spurgeon’s sermon of this passage, he spoke: “Surely, when we feel we are related to Christ, his exaltation is the source of the greatest joy to our spirits; we take a delight in it, seeing it is one of our family that is exalted. It is the Elder Brother of the great one family of God in heaven and earth; it is the Brother to whom all of us are related.”

God’s exaltation of Christ to the highest place, bestowing upon Him the name above all names, is the very source of our joy as true worshippers of Jesus. And as true worshippers of the Way, His exaltation is the very source of all comfort. What names have you been called? What names do you call yourself? Worthless, unlovable, helpless – His name reigns in triumph to the names we may entertain. And when we receive connection with Christ; when we are humbled and honored to submit to the authority that is the Son of God, His exaltation is ours. The authoritative command of Christ is this: every knee will bow – in heaven and on earth and under the earth. Every tribe, tongue, and nation will profess that Christ is Lord. What a privilege it is to be in relationship with the Name that is above every name.

Lord, King of the universe, our Father… we praise you. We rejoice in knowing that you will complete the very purpose of our design – for Christ to be glorified. I pray that we can have real encounters with you. Let us experience your saving grace: the freedom that engulfs us in the flame that the world will watch burn. I pray that we can respond to your Name exalted. Allow your name to move our hearts, so we may proclaim Truth and boast in your victory. In the everlasting name of Christ, our Lord. Amen.
