06 Mar The Lord Will Plead Their Cause – 3/6/21
Proverbs 22:22-23 – “Do not rob the poor, because he is poor, or crush the afflicted at the gate, for the Lord will plead their cause and rob of life those who rob them.“
Many are familiar with the story of Robin Hood – the infamous bandit who stole from the rich to feed the poor. Oppressive rulers – in the Disney version you might picture a self-absorbed lion: overtaxing the poor and indulging in lavish lifestyles. We tend to find this version of stealing acceptable, while recognizing the injustice of the rich growing richer and the poor becoming poorer. However, all of the world’s versions of reversing injustice fail to take into account our greatest poverty – sin.
God is the original Robin Hood, who took from the rich – His own riches – in order to supply for the needs of the poor. “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich” (2 Cor. 8:9). We are spiritually impoverished and our debt of sin is too great to pay back on our own. Yet, thanks be to God who cancelled our record of debt and all of its legal demands, nailing it to the cross so that we will appear with Him in glory (Col. 2:14, 3:5).
Heavenly Father, thank you for being our advocate and caring about our needs so much that you took them upon yourself. We pray for hearts that reflect yours – providing for the needs of those around us and pointing others to their greatest need – YOU! In Jesus name, Amen.
