Lovers of Self – 9/7/20

2 Timothy 3:1-2 – “But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self….”

When we follow culture’s teaching to love yourself, we miss the fact that the worldview means it in a way that elevates oneself above and ignores God. There is a kingdom way to love oneself and a worldly way to love oneself. One starts from within, with no reference point, and one starts from above and comes from what God says that is rooted and grounded in the truths of the gospel. When I love myself because God loves me, then it’s not about me. It’s not about what I am good at or not. God loves me because He made me. He loves me even though I have flaws. I don’t have to cover them up. This is true love and it is good for me and for those around me. Ultimately it brings glory to god.

This is the Gospel, that God would show His love for me by dying for me even while I was still in sin. Love starts with God and to truly know love we must know God. A love for self that doesn’t include God is a losing love. Watch out for that teaching.
