It’s Not About You – 5/2/21

Philippians 2:3 – “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves…”

Have you ever heard the phrase, “Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it’s thinking of yourself less”? This rings even more true as a follower of Jesus. We are commanded to love our neighbors and value them over our own personal interests. If our lives truly reflect the example set by Jesus, when He walked the earth, how much more would our neighbors and friends feel loved?

This verse says to do nothing out of selfish ambition. Instead of thinking about how humble we could be, I would argue that Jesus sets a better example by not even considering Himself at all, but considering His neighbor instead. It’s the simple freedom of self-forgetfulness – valuing others above ourselves.

God, I pray that you would search our hearts for areas where we consider ourselves as more important than others, and even ways we put our own plans above Yours. As our ambitions become less, I pray that as we navigate life you would be the only voice we listen to. Instead of focusing on being humble, let it be our prayer to not even think of ourselves at all. Amen.
