03 May In Appearance and Action – 5/3/21
Philippians 2:6-8 – “…who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”
In these verses, we see how Christ humbled Himself in appearance and action. He humbled Himself in appearance by putting off the form of God and putting on the form of man. In His actions, He had every right to strike down His accusers and executioners. Yet, He was obedient to God to the point of death. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was humble and obedient as He was mocked, mutilated, and murdered.
Paul gives this example first to show Christ’s humility and obedience to God in God’s plan of redemption. But he also gives it as an example of how we are to be humble. Christ’s example removes any excuses we have to being humble. We are to be obedient to God’s commands and empty of self-conceit, no matter what. In doing so, we will be faithful disciples who are following the example of our Lord.
Father, thank you for the humility and obedience of Christ. It is because of His work that we are forgiven and accepted by you. Forgive us for thinking so highly and so often of ourselves. We rejoice in the work of Christ that has wrought our salvation. May we have the mind of Christ, that we may walk in faithfulness and obedience to you.
