Humility Like Jesus – 12/2/20

Alyssa Schlarman

Matthew 23:11-12 The greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

Jesus comes and flips our view of what a great, powerful, and exalted person looks like. Philippians 2 says, “Christ Jesus…emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men… he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” This deepens the words in verse eleven. The great, powerful, exalted; they serve. How do we avoid simply living in disguise and act humbly to achieve true humility? We have to stop looking at others, our culture, our achievements, our possessions, or anything else in this world. Instead, we look up to Christ. We follow His standard and His example. Just as Jesus’ only measure was the Father, we keep ourselves accountable to the measure of Christ. We make ourselves low, and we serve, just as He did.

God, help us to not focus on others’ lives, or even our own, but instead on the life you lived on earth. Help us to measure according to your word, instead of societies expectations. Keep us fixed on you; to serve you with our whole hearts.
