Goodness Starts with God – 7/16/20

James 1:16-17  Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good and every perfect gift is from above

Verse 16 (“do not be deceived”) is so important as a connecting piece from the teaching on where sin comes from (both the desire and the act) and where good things come from.  Often we can be tempted to get this backward and blame God for bad things and give credit to people for good things. It is always the reverse.  Anything sinful comes from below, anything beneficial comes from above. God is the source of all good.

Goodness starts from above and comes down, it never starts down below. The question for us then is where are we looking for the good? Wisdom from above is pure, the wisdom from below is corrupt. Goodness starts with God. Always. Fix your eyes above, on Christ! Meditate on his character. Receive His goodness. Let it wash over you. Don’t look to the right or the left. Look to God.
