27 Feb Giving out of Abundance – 2/27/21
2 Corinthians 8:13-14 – “For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a matter of fairness your abundance at the present time should supply their need, so their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness.”
Earlier in his letter to the Corinthians, Paul makes a few points about giving. 1) Paul is not commanding, or forcing, them to give. In the Old Testament, we do see God commanding the Israelites to bring financial offerings (Exodus 30:11-16), but the heart of the offering is what matters most, and that is why Paul says in 8:8, “I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine.” We give not because we have to, but because we want to and we get to! 2) We give because of Jesus. Verse 9 says that Jesus, who was rich (i.e. the Maker and Creator of everything), became poor so that by His poverty, we would become rich. In the same way, we give because Christ first gave to us.
In verse 13 Paul makes a distinct point that he’s not asking the wealthy Corinthians to give everything so they themselves have nothing. He’s stating the fact that God has blessed the Corinthians with financial resources, they can bless the Christians in Jerusalem. And some day in return, those in Jerusalem would be ready to do the same.
This verse gives directly to the vision of church planting and Citylight’s vision statement to bring light to the world by planting “community center” churches that are well equipped to be a blessing to local communities both spiritually and physically. To live that out, Citylight Falls Church will supply out of abundance so that future church plants can be blessed and supply our need of being a blessing to the local communities. By giving out of abundance, we are directly living out our mission and vision. And that is our call in these verses.
Pray that God would reveal in your heart what it looks like to give out of abundance
Pray for specific areas where God may be showing you can give
Pray for a willing and surrendering spirit to truly give out of abundance
