Fortress in a World in Disarray – 3/20/20

John Arevalo

Psalm 46:6-7 – The nations rage, the kindgoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress

God is so gracious to continue to speak into our lives today in light of recent events. In these verses, having a realistic recognition of our present circumstances yet resting on the truth of God’s characteristics is what He wants for us today.

Two things to glean from:

This World– Verse 6 uses words such as rage, totter, and melt to depict a world in disarray. This is so timely as it reminds us of the tumultuous events occurring these days. It touches on the fear and anxiety that threatens the condition of our spirits and promotes a world without hope.

Our Fortress – That being said, the hopeless picture of verse 6 makes the following truths much sweeter, “The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.” God is with us. God is our fortress. Just imagine how your day would look like if you constantly remind yourself that He is with you and is your fortress. The God, who is the creator of heaven and earth, the alpha and the omega, the one who is and is to come, is with you and is your fortress! As you walk into the valley of the shadow of death, He is with you and is your fortress. As you serve the needs of our community (while risking your health), He is with you and is your fortress. In your efforts to serve your family, love your spouse, and work with integrity, He is with you and is your fortress. You can rest under the everlasting confines of His fortress as you walk with Him.

Let these simple truths abide in your hearts as you live with Him today.

Prayer Points

  1. Pray for a spirit of vigilance in always trusting that God is with us and is our fortress in light of recent events.
  2. Pray that our church would encourage one another to dwell in the eternal fortress that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
  3. Pray that our city would learn how to cling to God’s presence and hide under His fortress. Pray that many will be saved during this season.
