02 Sep Flee Youthful Passions – 9/2/20

2 Timothy 2:22 – “So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart”
Paul’s warning to Timothy at the beginning of verse 22 is clear—flee youthful passions. Some translations use the word “lusts” which adds clarity to what Paul is saying here. We are to flee
from our lusts for sexual desires, power, wealth, fame, praise, and so on. We are not to merely turn away from them, but rather to “flee” from them. This invokes the image and urgency of running in the opposite direction. What passions and lusts have you allowed to take hold of your life?
As we flee these lusts, we should instead pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace. That sounds so easy yet can be so hard. Therefore, Paul reminds us that we should pursue these things along with others who call on the Lord from a pure heart. We need the church to encourage and hold us accountable as we flee our lusts for righteous living.
Father, we know our hearts are full of sin. We pursue the things of this world and lustful desires that consume us. Help us Lord, to flee from these things and instead pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Help us to stand with and encourage others who call on you in their pursuit of this pureness of heart.
