Finish Well – 2/26/21

Rebekah Haile

2 Corinthians 8:11-12 – “So now finish doing it as well, so that your readiness in desiring it may be matched by your completing it out of what you have. For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have.”

Beginnings hold a breath of hope. There’s something mysterious and magical about the start of something – a goal, project or relationship. The initial excitement and anticipation of the unknown provides the momentum to take flight. However, the best of intentions can only take us so far. We need perseverance to stay mid-air when thunder threatens our security.

The church in Corinth was no exception to the common human experience of strong starts and stuck middles. They had the desire and means to give, but were lacking in the follow-through department. The encouragement Paul gives is not to go dig a well or fish for gold but to give out of what each person already possessed. God isn’t holding us accountable for what we don’t have but for what we do. Since all that we have is a gift from our good Father in heaven, anything we give is going back to the Source and Creator of all that is good. If we can entrust our eternal destiny to God, then we can certainly entrust every possession, person, and position that He’s given us to Him for His glory.

Lord, we ask that you would help us obey you by the power of your Spirit. Help our behavior match our beliefs. We ask that you would reveal to us anything that is hindering our obedience to you. We pray that you would give us humble hearts and open hands. In Jesus name, Amen.
