Fan the Flame – 7/27/20

Nate Crew

2 Timothy 1:6-7 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands,  for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”

It seems like the rest of the book is explaining how Timothy is to obey verse 6. Fan into flame the gift of God in you is the underlying current to everything else being said. It is the overarching theme. A fire must be fanned to stay strong, otherwise it will naturally die out. So, it is with our gifts and the calling on our lives.

Another way to translate it is to use the word rekindle. The coals are still there, the potential for a fire is still a possibility, but it must be rekindled. I think that’s probably where many of you are at today. The coals of your love for Jesus are still there, the coals of your excitement for ministry are still there, the coals of an active faith that uses what God has invested in you is still there, it’s simmering. Today is the day when God reminds you to rekindle that fire; to start fanning that flame, and to be the light and the warmth to the world you were made for. Don’t settle for stagnation. Don’t let fear drive your decisions.

Never let us grow comfortable or complacent with the brokenness in our world and in ourselves, but rather, bring us to a place where your peace and power guide us to be your hands and feet.
