13 Apr Do you fear God? – 4/13/20
Proverbs 1:7 – “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
This is the core principle of the entire book of Proverbs. As we take the next 31 days to go through Proverbs and learn to be wise, this truth has to constantly be with us. The basic thing we need to pursue is to truly fear the Lord. There is no progress in knowledge without progress in fear of the Lord. It is a disposition of the heart that will lead to clarity in the mind. Do you fear the Lord? Is there an appropriate sense of awe and respect? I think the author of Hebrews teaches us well on this topic.
Hebrews 12:28-29 – Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.
Acceptable worship is the kind filled with reverence and awe. The reason is because our God is a consuming fire. He is not to be trifled with or ignored. He judges those with eternal wrath who refuse to follow Him and still disciplines the one he loves. He knows everything you think, say, and do. He knows the motives of your heart at all times. Do you tremble at that thought? This is so essential for us to be even be able to appreciate the grace and mercy poured out on us through Jesus. The God who is to be feared wants to be our friend. That is amazing! But the friendship of God means less when we lose the fear of God.
We need to recover the fear of the Lord to be able to walk in the wisdom of the Lord. As you walk through the proverbs with us remember this is the essential part of every piece of wisdom you hear.
- Pray that the Lord would produce an appropriate fear of God in your heart.
- Pray that our church would walk in wisdom because we rightly fear the Lord.
- Pray that those in our community who are far from God, who are ignoring God or rejecting Jesus, would hear the Gospel and be saved. The God who is to be feared wants to be their friend!
