Deuteronomy 15:10-11 – “You shall give to him freely, and your heart shall not be grudging when you give to him, because for this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake. For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’“
Cheerful. That is the kind of heart we should have when being generous. As Pastor Nate has said, “the key to generosity is contentment”. And contentment comes from the grace that we have been shown, which comes from Christ. Therefore, contentment is Christ. Our generosity should be a response to our experiences of God’s love for us. Jesus is the greatest example of generosity when He gave His own life to pay our debt. And even after He paid our debt, He still gave us a gift! Can you believe that? He paid off everything we ever did, we didn’t deserve it, and then He offered us something better: a life in eternity with Him. And He did it with a cheerful heart. If this doesn’t make you want to share that gift, I don’t know what will. We always have something to give because we have a gift to share: the gift of Jesus Christ. God owes us absolutely nothing. We deserve absolutely nothing. Yet He gives us everything. If we want to be more like Jesus, I encourage you to give from a cheerful heart. If our contentment is in Christ, we should be more encouraged to give freely, because in Him we lack nothing.
Lord, thank you for the opportunity to give with a cheerful heart. I pray that we can be a people that first gives ourselves to you – our hearts. I pray we can give back what you have given us, so we can receive what only you have for us. If we can trust you with our souls for eternity, we can certainly trust you with our time, talents, and treasures. We praise. We love you. Amen.
