By Life or By Death – 8/25/20

Sarah Zeballos

Philippians 1:20 – “as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death.”

Paul writes to the church of Philippi; the first church he founded in Europe and a church who was close to his heart. They had heard of his second imprisonment in Rome. As he writes, Paul communicates to them the state of his heart, “I am imprisoned, unable to know how the future will unfold; however, I am sure that ‘to live is Christ and to die is gain.’” In other words, whether dead or alive and no matter what will happen to him, he wants the people of Philippi to know “God will be glorified.” Our trust in Christ does not lie in the state of our circumstances but in God’s eternal glory. May we live with our eyes set on Him.

Father, would you open up our eyes to see Jesus. Give us the Spirit of wisdom and revelation. Enlighten the eyes of our understanding, enlighten the eyes of our hearts, tenderize our hearts and let us see you rightly. Be glorified God in and through our lives. Amen.
