Be Humble, or Be Humbled – 12/3/20

Maria Goebel

Philippians 2:10-11 So that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, in heaven and on the earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

When reading the context of this verse I was immediately struck with the thought of humility. How often do you find yourself desiring control so badly that you end up falling into the pursuit of selfish ambitions, conceit, or maybe insisting on your own way? Throughout Philippians 2, Paul is addressing the saints to not do anything out of self-ambition or conceit, and he ties this into how not even Jesus Christ himself desired to be counted as equal to God. With this perspective, I believe it is important that we challenge ourselves to take a step in sacrificing control and moving forward in humility. By doing this, we recognize that our own plan is not what matters, but that God is sovereign and ultimately every knee will bow down to him. Let this encourage you to find rest in the fact that one day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess God’s perfect plan, which is better than your plan, will come to pass.

I pray that the Lord challenges us to walk in humility by surrendering our desire for control.

I pray that we find rest in God’s perfect plan, that one day every knee shall bow, and tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

I pray that God reveals to us the areas where we need to let go of control.
