Abiding in the Spectacularness of God – 3/19/21

Deuteronomy 6:4-9

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[a] You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Love the Lord with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. Jesus told us that this is the greatest commandment. But we must remember that we can only love the Lord because He first loved us. The story of God’s redemptive love is shown on the cross, through the resurrection and the indwelling of His Holy Spirit given to us. If you believe, and are a follower of Jesus, then the Holy Spirit living inside of you is what makes it possible for you to obey the Lord and love Him with everything. But how do we love Him with everything…all of our heart, soul, and strength? By abiding in Him. We cannot follow the Lord through gritting our teeth and “doing the right thing”, but by cooperating with Christ’s life, designed to shine, within us. To be transformed, we are to “continually contemplate God’s glory, focusing our spiritual gaze not on Christian duties…but on God’s spectacularness.” This only happens when we spend time with the Lord to learn and listen to who He says He is and who He has called us to be.

God, we praise you for your steadfast love. There is nothing on this earth that compares to it. Thank you for your Holy Spirit that resides in the hearts of all believers, continually changing us from the inside out. Let us be a people who abide in you. Continue to show us your heart so that we may continue to look more and more like Lord, continue to reveal the true intentions and motivations of our hearts. Reveal the obstacles and idols that we have placed over you.

As we abide in your love, let it overflow into our families, our workplaces, our communities, our church and our city.
