04 May A friend of the King – 5/4/20
Proverbs 22:11 – “He who loves purity of heart, and whose speech is gracious, will have the king as his friend.“
C.S. Lewis said, “Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: ‘What! You too? I thought I was the only one.’”
We instantly bond with those who share similar interests, experiences or personality traits, making us feel less strange and alone.
When taking into account the full revelation of Scripture, Jesus is both our king and friend. He is the King of kings and Lord of lords (Revelation 19:16), and has called us His friends (John 15:15).
He displays the characteristics described in this proverb, being both pure of heart and gracious in speech.
Spending time with Jesus allows for us to develop the qualities He already possesses in abundance. As Jesus’ friends we can become like Him in heart, thought, and speech.
Jesus said, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8). Pray that we would see God for all that He is, continually receiving His perfect love in order to love others out of a pure heart with gracious words.
